How This Green Smoothie Recipe Saved My Life (and Sanity)
Today it my birthday, so this is how I am celebrating. New blog! And my first recipe on my new blog.
Welcome to Tia’s Kitchen! Hope you stick around here with me. I love your company and love to see your sunshiny face.
So, if you read my second to last post on Glügle Gluten-Free, you read about how my body was revolting against me. Or at least that what it seemed like.
I have been gluten free since 2006 and it is wonderful. All of my crazy stuff I had been living with since I could remember was gone, and I felt great.
Then I had my second kid. The Littlest Man is amazing, don’t get me wrong. But my body was not bouncing back like it had after the Little Man was born. The main thing was the heartburn. After 2 years it wouldn’t go away. In fact, it kept getting worse.
So after my new insurance kicked in, I saw a doctor and she ran an allergy panel on me. (The IgG ELISA for those interested.)
It came back saying…
I was very allergic to egg yolks, egg whites, brewer’s yeast, baker’s yeast and cow milk. (For some reason I am ok with cheese and yogurt, so I don’t know about that one.)
The day the info came in the mail was the Littlest Man’s 2nd birthday. So, I ate my burger with a bun. Some potato salad with mayo, mustard and eggs. And cake and ice cream.
I was so miserable that night I thought I was going to lose my mind.
The next day I woke up and decided to eat only what I was supposed to.
After some research, I found out that yeast is a starter for: wine, vinegar, soy sauce and citric acid. And they can’t distill it all out like gluten. So, all of those were out.
Do you know what that means? NO CONDIMENTS! Seriously! They all have freakin’ vinegar.
So even with cutting out over half of my regular diet, I still wasn’t feeling great. I was better, but only a little bit.
I decided to go drastic. I needed to give my body a break. Now, I am not one of those people who can just fast. I hate it. I will fight it tooth and nail. (No matter how much The Big Man tries to convince me.)
So I did second best. I went on a green smoothie fast. I make a giant one in the morning and a giant one in the afternoon/evening. (The recipe below is for 2 servings, but I drink about 1 ½ servings in the morning and have the last half as a snack later.)
Anyway, below is a list of the symptoms of my allergies before going on my green smoothie fast.
- horrible bloating
- painful gas
- nausea
- skin on thumb drying up and pealing off
- cramping
- flatulence
- fatigue
- muscle cramping
- joint pain
- headaches
- respiratory issues
- itchy skin
- acute dispepsia (extremely bad heartburn)
- blotchy red skin
- difficulty swallowing

Pretty cool right?
To be honest, I did have a little tiny snack bowl of granola once or twice a day. I was just too hungry. But, by the first day, almost all of the symptoms were gone. And by day 3, they were gone completely.
Whoo-Hoo!
Now, I did have food for early dinner on the 4th of July, but I stuck to my non-allergenic foods. Which was totally fine except the condiment part. But guacamole makes a good topping for hamburgers, too.
My symptoms came back a little bit but not too bad. So I am sticking with the smoothies for now. (There a bunch of recipes coming.) And I am just going to add “real” food back little by little.
So, below is the Green Smoothie Recipe.
